Without the unconditional guidance and support of the coaches at Dirigo Fitness, I would not be where I am today in my fitness journey
I have always been “fit” in some way. And I was always active during my childhood, teenage, and college years. Achieving a degree in nutrition and then working as a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator for the past 16 years has also motivated me to exercise and keep myself at a healthy weight to provide an example to the patients I counsel.
Prior to coming to Dirigo Fitness in November 2014, my exercise regimen included running outside or on a treadmill, Bikram (hot) yoga 3-4 times per week, and the occasional use of the elliptical. I considered weight training a ‘waste of time’ because it never seemed to give me any ‘results.’ I typically considered how many calories I burned during exercise to be the most important component of my exercise routine. As I entered my thirties I struggled to keep the physique that I had never had trouble maintaining while in my twenties; I often would put myself on limited calorie diets only to see minimal changes on the scale.
My first visit to a Crossfit facility was miserable (not Dirigo) in the summer of 2012 when I was seeking a better workout to improve my strength and stamina (and again related to my body succumbing to the loss of muscle mass with the aging process). I was treated like an outsider and given no instruction or encouragement from any of the coaches, nor was I welcomed back after the workout was completed.
I quickly judged these types of gyms as ‘social clubs’ and ‘cult like’ and avoided them like the plague. I continued running and hot yoga despite seeing minimal changes in my physique the more I performed them. It wasn’t until I met Brian Ligotti at a local health fair in November 2014 where I learned that there was a Crossfit gym who welcomed all types of athletes. He encouraged me to drop by the Saturday free class to see if it would fit my lifestyle. I did just that the following Saturday and since that first visit I have only become stronger and healthier after every work out I complete. I was welcomed every time I walked in the door by Brian or another coach. I was asked about my personal health and fitness goals. I was encouraged and motivated during each workout. I learned the importance of strength training as well as metabolic conditioning. And despite my background in nutrition, I quickly learned how poorly I had managing my own nutritional health; and how it only been promoting my muscle loss.
In January of 2016, I decided to take on an individualized workout program making a commitment to workout 6 days a week. Brian and I met to review my caloric and protein intake and my fitness goals. Over the past 7 months, I have dropped 4% in body fat and I am now the healthiest I have ever been at the young age of 40. I no longer look at food as the enemy to maintaining my weight but as the only way I can achieve my fitness goals. I am so much happier with my body despite what the number on the scale tells me because I know I can lift 110# over my head, squat clean 120# and run faster and longer than ever before (8.6 minute /mile).
I continue to work on my personal fitness goals and now realize it is a marathon, not a sprint to reach them. I am truly grateful for Brian and all of the coaches at Dirigo Fitness. Without their unconditional guidance and support, I would not be where I am today in my fitness journey. If you are considering a lifestyle change for the better, I can’t emphasize enough that the first step through the door at Dirigo Fitness will be the best and most important step of your life.
Phil | "Helped not only my body image, but lifestyle"
When I originally came in, I just wanted to check out Dirigo Fitness and see what they were all about. I never thought that it would really work, but I had tried all of the other “yo-yo” diets and never saw any results. I noticed that even after the first week, this was a program that I could stick too. I have always been one of those that was skeptical of programs that “guarantee” to help you lose weight…NOT ANYMORE!
This program has helped not only my body image, but my lifestyle. It is the perfect fit for me. If the coaches at Dirigo weren't here cheering me on and reminding me of why I want to do this, I would definitely not had any success!
Melissa - "I gained control of my life"
lost 39.6 pounds, 41.75 inches, and 15.2% body fat in 38 WEEKS
In June of 2014, I joined Dirigo Fitness with the intent to get back in shape after a six-month fitness hiatus. Was I successful? You bet. Since then, I have lost almost 40 pounds, gained muscle, increased my confidence, and acquired a community of super-supportive friends. I must admit when I first started, the idea of Crossfit and high-intensity training intimidated me- a lot- but the coaching staff helped to quell these fears by explaining new movements to me and ensuring that I was performing them both correctly and safely. For anyone ready to gain control of their life and get healthy- Dirigo Fitness is for you.
Nancy - "Training - for the rest of my life"
Some people come to Dirigo Fitness to train for an upcoming athletic event or challenge. I came to train for the event called The-Rest-Of-My-Life. Approaching my seventh decade, I wanted to work on strength, balance, and flexibility so that I can continue to explore and take on new adventures, and minimize health issues. My trainer Noah has inspired me to push for more while also keeping me safe and giving me lots of training choices so I don't get bored. This program is an investment that has already given me great rewards. I'm all in, for me.
